Wooden Building Garbed in Green: Turó de la Peira Sports Centre

Anna Noguera and Javier Fernández have created a sports hall and indoor swimming pool in the structurally disadvantaged area north of Barcelona. The design stacks the uses, thus gaining room for a public park for the people of the district. The architects decided to build the volume completely out of wood – still a rather unusual means of construction in Spain. The walls, ceilings and trusses were delivered to the building site in prefabricated form. Polycarbonate multiwall sheeting and a number of skylights ensure natural illumination for the sports hall in the upper storey, while a greened façade provides solar shading. The swimming pool, on the other hand, is partially buried in the ground, thus minimising energy use despite the constant air and water temperature.

Anna Noguera studied architecture in Barcelona before working for Torres Lapeña for several years. In 1992, Noguera founded her own practice and has since realized social housing projects, educational buildings, and health facilities for the public administration – with a focus on sustainability and contextuality.

Javier Fernández is the founder of J2J Architects, which, in addition to classic architectural and urban design projects, is also devoted to research. Fernández gained previous experience by working with several well-known architects, including Norman Foster, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Nikken Sekkei, and Shigeru Ban. The two architectural firms collaborated on the Turó de la Peira sports centre in Barcelona.
