Sara Kulturhus by White Arkitekter

The Sara Cultural Centre in the Swedish city of Skellefteå unites various cultural functions in a single building ensemble made of wood. Along with several theatre stages and public event spaces, it features a concert hall, an art museum, a gallery, studios for dance and ballet, and a municipal library. The hotel with conference centre, which also forms part of the complex, is situated in an 82-m tower that currently counts as the world’s second-tallest wooden high-rise. The multi-layered supporting structure − a skeleton of supports and joists of laminated timber − is made of 12,000 m3 of regional wood. Photographer Jonas Westling has documented the spectacular building work.

We feature this project in Detail 12.2021.
