In our video series #Meet the Architects, architects present current projects from their offices. Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen from Office S&M explain their design for a studio extension in north London. In Overcast House, north-facing sheds direct a lot of even daylight into a colour consultant's new workspace. The concave-shaped, pink-pigmented concrete shells of the façade were developed especially for the project. How the self-supporting elements are connected to the aerated concrete wall behind them and which colours dominate the interior is documented in Detail 1/2.2022.
Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen met while studying at Bartlett School of Architecture. After working together on several smaller projects, they founded Office S&M in 2013. Today the firm consists of four architects, who work on projects ranging from residential buildings to shops and public squares, involving both new builds and refurbishments for public and private clients alike. Be it a house, street, or neighbourhood, Office S&M respond to the context of each project and honour the existing building fabric. They often wield colours and patterns like building materials to create a sense of drama, a cheerful atmosphere, or unexpected spaces. Treating design as a collaborative process, they value the close involvement of clients and users. In 2020, Office S&M received the Young Architect of the Year Award.
