Atelier Barda, SSENSE, Adrien Williams

Minimalist and neutral: SSENSE headquarters in Montreal

The Atelier Barda architecture studio was commissioned with the design of the headquarters of SSENSE, the world’s leading online retailers of haute couture and luxury streetwear. The building stands in Montreal’s old textile district. The project involved the complete redesign of the existing space in order to meet the new requirements of the company. At the same time, the aim of the project was to create a space that would evince the building’s industrial past.

To this end, the architects had all the surfaces appear as neutral as possible; the green of the plants is the only colour accent in the minimalist working room. Its openness serves the dismantling of formal hierarchies, for managers share the space with employees. The spatial distance between the various teams will also be reduced, which will enable conversations among colleagues. The architectural staging includes the path of movement. Visitors must pass through a dark anteroom to enter the open lobby area, which seems like an oasis in the middle of the vast white space.
