Light year at another Biennale; Pavilion by Studio Up for the 2011 Shenzhen and Hong Kong Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture.
Text: Detail Daily
I dwell on the this project for two reasons: firstly I have never heard of the Shenzhen and Hong Kong Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture which has been going since 2005. It might be relatively obscure now, but if for fun, we extrapolate from the economic growth curves between China and Italy over the last decade, this event will overtake Venice in...
Secondly, Studio Up were one of 6 practices selected by Terance Riley who curated the event around the theme of Architecture creates cities – Cities create Architecture. They have created this modest pavilion which seems to explore the theme, through light, in a simple but interesting way.
The pavilion is a tapering tunnel whose inside is reflective. One end is much larger than than the other giving different experiences of the entry and the view at the opposite end of the city.
Being inside the tunnel cuts off the viewer from the surrounding city, but also reflects the city in a kaleidoscopic way making them aware they are part of it.
