Contemporary furniture: Nautilus by Marc Fish.

logrithmic spiral table

Nautilus is a furniture piece I have recently come across by the designer / maker Marc Fish. The brief was open, both a dream and a challenge to any designer. It was however constrained or perhaps informed by the fact that it was designed for a specific, large loft-style apartment overlooking the sea.

The resulting table is clearly a creature from the sea, or you might think so, as it looks like something between a shell and a dinghy. It is experimental and beautifully crafted, but it is also technically innovative. A new way was found to turn 4000 veneer strips into a 10mm thick logarithmic spiral. And in there, somewhere, is the clue to how it was done!
