Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Centre, Zaha Hadid Architects

Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects have clad the organic, fluid structure of the Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Centre with a white tile pattern. The museum devoted to contemporary art (MICA) comprises eight galleries covering 10,000 m2; these are grouped around an atrium conceived for large installations. A flexible multipurpose hall and a theatre with 1,800 seats determine the rest of the cultural program.

Unique spatial interplays arise in the exterior spaces of the cultural centre. The interstitial areas of the organically shaped exterior shell of the building, which offer a view of the nearby Meixi Lake, create interconnected courtyards where the surrounding park landscape and pedestrian paths join in a fluid motion reflected in the architecture.

As the largest cultural centre in Hunan province, this project puts the city of Changsha on the map as one of the country’s leading cultural and media hubs. The Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Centre will inaugurate its program with the exhibition Flowing Eternity by MOTSE, a group of 40 artists and researchers from Shenzhen.
