A Second Spring for Thonet’s Classic in Tubular Steel

Various classics were selected for the outdoor collection, including Mart Stam’s cantilevered chairs S 33 and S34, Marcel Breuer’s lounge chair known as S 35 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s cantilevered chair S 533. All these have been given a new coat of paint—not only for colour, but also for protection, with a special lacquer: the ThonetProtect coating. This will ensure that the furniture can withstand UV rays. The same goes for the woven seats and backs of the chairs.

The colour range for the frames from the 2014 Classics in Colour collection comprises seven shades which give a nod to the colour theory of the Bauhaus movement on the one hand and to Johannes Ittens’ colour wheel on the other. The twelve additional nuances for the netting material allow a multiplicity of variations. Matching cushions and covers are available.

Designer Miriam Püttner from the Thonet Design Team, who is responsible for this project, says: “Our goal was to create a collection that is weatherproof and will work all year long. The selected tubular-steel icons offer extensive creative scope for this endeavour.”
