A Concert Hall of Wire Mesh: Fillmore Sculpture by Tresoldi Studio
Client: Cathédrale Restaurant
Design: Tresoldi Studio
Location: 112 E 11th St, New York, NY 10003 (US)
Tresoldi Studio, the design studio that has arisen from the wire-mesh art of Edoardo Tresoldi, and Fillmore present the first in-house sculpture for the Cathédrale Restaurant at New York’s Moxy East Village hotel. The hotel, designed by the Rockwell Group, is a tribute to the East Village - one of Manhattan’s historical centres of the artistic and musical movements of the 1960s.
Inspired by the structure of the Fillmore East concert hall on the Lower East Side, Tresoldi Studio designed a sculpture to hang from the ceiling above the main space, where it “recalibrates the spatial and temporal perceptions of its visitors”. Deep figurations and a fragmented central dome at the centre of the six-metre deep wire installation work to create a play on fullness and emptiness.
Volumetric and visual distortions project the contours of the old Fillmore East concert hall in a gastronomical context. In this historical setting of two different scenes, the musical legacy of the Fillmore East converges with an aesthetic presence that works with industrial concrete and metal elements.
