Sustainability and Responsibility in Construction

The Rieder Group, which specializes in products and facades made of glass fibre reinforced concrete, can be considered a green company. The company focuses on the production of sustainable building products and continuously developing environmentally friendly processes. The Austrian family business is also actively committed to the “Energiewende” – the transition to renewable energy – as well as cross industry thinking and responsible entrepreneurship.

This commitment has recently been recognized: Wolfgang Rieder, owner and managing director of the Rieder Group, was appointed as a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University. As one of nine scholarship holders selected from 200 applicants in the 2019/2020 semester, he will be able to devote himself to issues such as climate protection and sustainable construction. The Loeb Fellowship, which is linked to the Harvard University School of Design, traces its roots to a foundation set up by entrepreneur and philanthropist John L. Loeb. Experienced practitioners from various professional fields who have influenced the design of the built and natural environment are given the opportunity to deepen and share their knowledge.

According to Rieder, the architecture scene must play a leading role in the discussion on carbon emissions so that politicians and the construction industry will commit to effective measures. Ecological building expertise – from the production of construction materials to environmentally-friendly mobility and eco-social urban development – has long existed. It is now a matter of implementing concrete actions at all levels and identifying possible solutions.

Sustainability and environmental compatibility have long been standards in the company – which sees itself as a zero-waste company. The production of glass fibre reinforced concrete, for example, consumes very little fossil-based primary energy. Residual materials from production are used, for example, as filling material for noise barriers, while the recycling of glass fibre reinforced concrete and the use of offcuts help to conserve resources.In addition, all Rieder products are free of toxic ingredients. With a tested, long-term durability of more than 50 years, Rieder facades do not need to be sanded down or painted. Numerous built projects have been evaluated according to international building certification systems such as DGNB, Leed and Breeam. For example, the TechBase innovation centre in Regensburg received a DGNB certificate, while the Solstice on the Park residential tower in Chicago, which features Rieder’s concrete skin facade cladding, is classified according to the Leed system, among others.
