A Gleaming Green Shell: Cemetery Administration Building in Sundbyberg
The new spatial facilities were meant to disturb the park-like character of the cemetery as little as possible, for which reason, the single-storey structure is restrained in its cubic form as well. Set against the edge of a slope at the rear, the flat complex is divided into a number of smaller volumes. The various sections of the building of different height abut each other like containers and, with their setbacks and projections, form two sheltered courtyards. The internal spaces are lined up along a central access corridor, their uses arranged from representative to functional. Situated at the entrance is a large assembly space. This is followed by offices, staff and changing rooms plus ancillary spaces. Set apart at the end is a large garage for vehicles together with an integral workshop.
In complete contrast to the intense green of the facade are the internal spaces, which are distinguished by the use of pale timber. The prefabricated elements in cross-laminated pine, treated with hard wax oil, form ready-to-use surfaces. As a result, the interior provides a friendly ambience for staff and visitors alike.
