In Perspective: Il Makiage Shop by Zaha Hadid Architects

The cosmetics brand Il Makiage is opening a new shop in New York. Zaha Hadid Architects have taken architecture as a means of interpreting the characteristic identity of this label: they have transformed the graphic motif depicted on all the company’s products into a three-dimensional structure.

In an integrated pavilion, an intense rhythm is created by folded, alternately brightly lit and black bands. This contrast is reinforced by slight turns along the entire length of the interior space. The dynamic of the rotation influences visitors’ perception as they make their way through the pavilion.

The alternation between glossy and matt surfaces refers to the packaging design used by Il Makiage. The entire structure melds into a sheltered space which cleverly steers visitors’ concentration towards the cosmetics. The lighting and mirrors used for selecting and trying out the make-up have been skilfully integrated into the overall installation.
