Our River City, C.F. Møller Architects

An Ecological Riparian City on the Gudenå: Our River City by C.F. Møller Architects

With their winning design Our River City, C.F. Møller Architects, Niras, RED | Cushman & Wakefield and Urgent Agency have connected the medieval centre of the Danish harbour city of Randers with the Gudenå River as an ecological waterfront city. The building plan consists of two blue spaces: a natural space along the river and an “urban water space” around the northern harbour basin, which also serves as rainwater storage due to a floodgate system.

The plan will create living space for animals and plants as well as new urban connections to the south and north which will lay the foundations for a series of new city districts. Historically and culturally relevant buildings on the Gudenå will be developed into a hybrid city and water landscape. An entirely new infrastructure of traffic connections, bicycle paths and pedestrian zones will allow the old industrial buildings to interact with the newly fashioned water city.

The strategic heart of the project is the Climate Ribbon, a four-kilometre flood-protection system along the bed of the river. New physical connection points on the riverbank will allow the creation of living concepts in direct proximity to nature as one of the main features of the master plan.
