Sustainably into the Future: Sykkel Hotell by Various Architects

A bicycle hotel opened recently in Lillestrøm – a city known as Norway’s favourite cycling town. The design of the building follows the canon of the Neues Bauen movement – a green, public rooftop terrace serves as a replacement for the area lost at ground level. The soft slope of the wooden roof towards the station square is like an inviting gesture to enter and use the space. The terrace, with its extensive view, invites visitors to stay a while as well on one of the wooden benches or the wavy roof surface.

The free form of the roof rests on the glass box of the bicycle hotel. The interconnected exterior and interior spaces arises thanks to expressive design: the inside room height ranges from 2.70 and 6.00 metres according to the grade of the roof. Translucent façade elements let daylight in and transform the building by night into a structure with a magical glow.
