Paris: Sightseeing on the Seine via Muscle-Driven Fitness Boat

Many designers and inventors have given thought to the fact that ordinary fitness studios generate a lot of wasted energy. Now there is a concrete project that offers a great opportunity to make good use of this power.

A Navigating Gym is a floating fitness studio developed by Carlo Ratti Associati in cooperation with the manufacturer Technogym, architecture group Terreform ONE and the URBEM Institute. The gym cruises down the Seine driven only by the power generated by the fitness fans during their workout.

The boat is 20 metres long and offers space for up to 45 passengers. The fitness area is equipped with Technogym’s Artis machines, special devices that harness energy for reuse.

While the passengers toil on exercise bikes and crosstrainers, the boat sails through the city on the Seine. Anyone who likes can sail along. This creates not only a whole new urban experience; the river is integrated into the city’s infrastructure in an entirely new way.

Augmented-reality screens show the fitness fans how much energy they contribute to driving the boat, as well as information and facts about the state of the Seine.

With its transparent glass housing that can be opened in the summertime, the boat offers unusual views over the urban panorama. At night, the boat can be used for parties and other celebrations. This is truly an exciting, fresh new development.
