BIG's and off architecture's Paris Parc wins the first price in a competition to design a new research center for the University Jussieu in Paris. The Danish office BIG architects in collaboration with the Paris-based firm off architecture won with their proposal for a new multidisciplinary research center for France’s leading university for science and medicine, the University of Jussieu situated in the heart of Paris, France.
They proposed to place the new 15,000 square meter facility for science and medicine called “Paris Parc” between Jean Nouvel's Institute du monde arabe and an open park within the Jussieu Campus.
The architects’ intention is to strengthen with the new facility the international appeal of the school and to unify scholars and the business community by designing a building that will improve physical connections on campus as well as the university’s visual integration within the urban fabric.
BIG and off architecture propose the construction of a new building that responds and conforms in its design and geometry to the existing buildings surrounding the site. In addition the building’s concept focuses on optimizing views, daylightning, and accessibility. To encourage interactions amongst researchers as well as with the city, the architect’s propose to top the building with a public rooftop park – hence the building’s name “Paris Parc”.
