MORI x hako dental clinic by UID Architects

Entrance to building

A dental clinic in Fukuyama City by UID Architects is an essay in materiality, light and views. Users of the building appear led through from one intriguing space to the next by tempting glimpses of what lies beyond, like a glutton might follow the aroma of freshly baked bread.

Once in the main spaces, views out are given through punched windows in the external envelope. This treatment appears to link the internal courtyards and other voids with the outside, giving a sense of orientation to the building. The interior surfaces and furniture are clad in plywood sheets that are detailed to suggest a single massive ply construction. The exterior of the box form is clad in horizontal timber strip boards, reinforcing the building's massive appearance and giving it a dark brooding feel.
