Comfortable on a folding chair

Patan chair, Tomoko Azumi and t.n.a., 2011

Folding chairs are usually placed temporarily - but do they have to be uncomfortable to sit on?Tomoko Azumi and the London-based t.n.a. design team, designed this year a chair for the Italian furniture manufacturer Zillo A&C, who is in business since the 1920s, that proves the opposite: Patan is introduced as a dining chair that is a folding chair and that allows it to sit comfortably and to rest one's elbow on the chair's back.

The Patan chair is designed by Tomoko Azumi for everyday use and thus it could come especially in handy in small city apartments where the best furniture is the one that can be folded and put away when space is needed.

Several chairs can be stacked easily, which does not only help to keep one’s living space open, but also allows the designers to ship six chairs inside a standard cardboard box thus reducing the environmental impact.

The Patan chair is produced in natural or in stained colors beech wood-plywood and thus prepared to endure the daily folding and storing activity.

In general the chair comes across as a very useful piece of newly interpreted, classic furniture and therefore reflects the designers goal to “improve the quality of daily life, its functionality and visual landscape.”

Patan has been launched this year at the Salone del Mobile in Milano and is on display on September 25 at the The Director's Cut at 100% Design in London.
