Mies van der Rohe Award 2019, Umgestaltung von 530 Wohnungen - Grand Parc Bordeaux

2019 EU Mies van der Rohe Award for Grand Parc Bordeaux

The winner of the 2019 EU Mies van der Rohe Award has been determined! As announced by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the Grand Parc Bordeaux" social housing project by Lacaton & Vassal architects, Frédéric Druot Architecture and Christophe Hutin Architecture is this year's winner.

The prize-winning "Grand Parc Bordeaux" project concerns the innovative transformation of three huge residential blocks containing 530 dwellings altogether.  Instead of completely demolishing the post-year housing stock to replace it with apartments with a reduced surface area, the architects have even managed to increase the volume in the "Grand Parc Bordeaux" project. Advance research on the mix of occupants, space use and material shortfalls has resulted in an optimistic modern social housing ensemble that  improves residential quality for the occupants, both individually and collectively, as the jury stated after personal inspection of the buildings.

In addition, BAST of Toulouse has been announced as the winner of the 2019 Emerging Architecture Prize - Mies van der Rohe Award for its extension to the canteen at a school with 61 pupils in Montbrun-Bocage, Haute-Garonne, near the French Pyrenees.
