Hotel »The Waterhouse« in Schanghai
The area surrounding the South Bund along the banks of the Huangpu, situated east of the historic urban core and in direct vicinity to the new in-quarter »Cool Docks«, used to be Shanghai’s port district. For the most part, the historic urban fabric dating back to the 1920s and 1930s is still present, and three- to four-story trade and storage buildings characterize the cityscape here. Sale and use conversion of a building during the rapid growth that took place in China in the recent years typically meant demolishing and replacing it with Western-oriented steel and glass skyscraper architecture. The adjacent skyline of Pudong emphasizes this.
