Architectural Quality in Supermarkets - the MPreis Phenomenon

After Graz and Vorarlberg, the federal state of Tyrol in Austria is now attracting increasing international attention with its architecture. In this respect, the MPreis grocery chain has undergone a specially dynamic development. The epithets attached to the design of the company's supermarkets range from noteworthy to unique. There are three reasons for this: firstly, the MPreis chain confines its activities to a single, precisely defined region, namely Tyrol; secondly, despite the dominance of anonymous organizations today, this concern is very much a family undertaking – firmly in the hands of the Molk family; and thirdly, the MPreis image is determined by different, but always appropriate, architectural designs for its various supermarkets.
