Seamless Urban Planning: Jiangyin Greenway by BAU

As are many other countries, China is making a concerted effort to improve quality of life in urban areas and entice people to leave their cars in favour of healthier, more sustainable forms of movement. As a rule, the resulting projects are built to a significantly larger scale than here at home. One example is the 6.75-km Jiangyin Greenway created by the Chinese-Australian planning office BAU in the city of Jiangyin, which is home to 1.2 million people and located by the south bank of the Yangtze. The greenway runs north and south through a green space that has, until now, divided the city in two. Therefore, the planning aimed not only to develop a new pathway connection from north to south, but also to reconnect the western and eastern sides of the city. Like the nearby freeway, large sections of the red asphalt trail for pedestrians and cyclists are set on stilts. Nonetheless, the planners have added stairways and ramps leading down to street level at all strategic points.

The curvy course of the pathway on stilts was not chosen arbitrarily, but represents a significantly smaller version of the Yangtze as it flows from its source to its estuary. This means that the greenway forges a link to the river, which generally plays a peripheral role in Jiangyin life. Widened, balcony-like areas, some of which feature benches and pergolas, raised roundabouts and a sort of seating grandstand are available for breaks along the way. In the medium term, pavilions − for restaurants or perhaps bicycle repair workshops − will be added along the greenway. The planners have already determined the size and locations for these additional services.

The steel supporting structure of the raised pathway is based on uniform column intervals of 16 m beneath ramps and in other lower areas, and 32 m wherever a road goes under the greenway or people can walk underneath the path. The bridges along the pathway are borne by steel trussed girders and suspended constructions. They are just as colourful as the rest of the trail.
