Our Favourites: Three Exciting Rooftop Landscapes

Interacting with their surroundings, the roofs of an underground art museum in Helsinki, an extension for the Red Cross in Copenhagen and a museum building in St. Louis in the USA attract all eyes.

Beneath the Pavement, Art: Amos Rex Museum in Helsinki

The "Lasipalatsi" (Glass Palace) built in 1936 by Viljo Revell, Heimo Riihimäki and Niilo Kokko is one of Helsinki's landmarks. Now the architects JKMM have renovated it and added an underground exhibition building for the Amos Anderson Art Museum. Only the striking tile-covered domes in the forecourt indicate the new building.

Step-by-Step Encounters: Red Cross Volunteer House by COBE

Cobe proves that a roof can act as an urban link with the triangular, stepped form of the extension for the Copenhagen Red Cross. Ochre-coloured clinker bricks already characterise the exterior façade of the existing building and are now also used in the staircase structure of the new building.

New Connections: Cooper Robertson and JCDA Revitalize the Museum and Park at the Gateway Arch

In a grand and welcoming gesture, Cooper Robertson and James Carpenter Design Associates (JCDA) open and expand the underground Museum of Westward Expansion at the foot of Eero Saarinen's Gateway Arch monument in St. Louis. A semi-circular entrance simultaneously forms the memorable museum opening, creates a new flowing transition to the park landscape and thus a direct connection to downtown St. Louis.

Client: Gateway Arch Park Foundation
Architecture: Cooper Robertson; James Carpenter Design Associates (JCDA)
Location: 11 N 4th St, St. Louis, MO 63102 (USA)
