Museum building at a steep site: Sauerland Museum extension by Bez + Kock

The District of Higher Sauerland wanted to enlarge Sauerland Museum, located in Arnsberg since 1937, into the Museum- und Kulturforum Südwestfalen to create a venue for top-level temporary exhibitions of nationwide interest. In the respective completion second place was taken by the Stuttgart architects Bez + Kock, who in the contract awarding procedure were then entrusted with the project.

In the first project stage, the Baroque building completed in 1605 was thoroughly renovated and its permanent exhibition redesigned. The proposal for the extension at the adjacent 45-degree slope between the Landsberger Hof and Ruhrstrasse was completely reworked, the new building having been integrated into the slope and linked to the old one by a tunnel in the original plans, but the complex earthworks threatened to become too expensive for the client. The ground floor of the extension now lies 20 metres below the level of the entrance to the Landsberger Hof, while a bridge-like passage has been created to link the old building’s basement storey to the upper storey of the extension.

The new building steps down the slope from north to south in three stages, gaining in spatial volume at each storey as it progresses from the upper level, where the exhibition area starts, to the multi-purpose hall on the next one and finishing at the large exhibition hall at road level.

Visitor access remains at the old building. The bridge-like passage into the extension leads straight to a floor-to-ceiling window that provides views of the city from a height of 15 metres.  The bridge solution also made it possible to retain the Englische Promenade already existing below the Landsberger Hof, with the historical footpath now leading underneath the bridge to the public roof terrace on the museum extension.
