Theatre Seating for a Listed Theatre

Between 2016 and its reopening in August 2020, the Stadtcasino Basel was renovated, converted and partly supplemented with new buildings according to plans drawn up by Herzog & de Meuron. The Stehlinsche Music Hall, which dates from 1876, was restored to its 1905 condition, with the 1388 true-to-original replica folding seats being manufactured by Girsberger. The Swiss furniture manufacturer developed the seating based on historical photographs, and agreed the seating comfort, folding mechanism, choice of materials and colours as well as dimensions with the architects on the basis of prototypes. Solid oak wood, fire-safe certified upholstery foams and velour fabric were used. Base fronts were covered with mirror-polished chrome-nickel steel, while the low-noise folding mechanism uses a pneumatic stop damper. Girsberger also repaired the rattan-wickerwork folding chairs on the gallery of the listed Hans-Huber Hall. In the foyers, large canopies and central benches were installed, and the bench on the ground floor can seat 24 people.
