Behind semi-transparent wood facade: Parking Complex in Zutphen

The steel skeleton-frame structure with suspended prestressed concrete floor slabs has neither a roof nor an insulated outer skin. The ground floor is enclosed simply within a steel grid. The upper three levels are clad with open-spaced vertical pine strips fixed at various angles. This creates a lively surface texture, to which individual red steel sections lend an additional rhythm. The open structure ensures natural ventilation and lighting of the parking areas and also affords fascinating views into and out of the building through the facade. Thanks to its simple modular form of construction, this four-storey complex can be increased in height to meet growing demand.

Cars enter the parking complex from the northern access road and reach the upper levels via external spiral ramps. The pedestrian entrance is situated directly next to the neighbourhood square. To the left a staircase leads up to the parking decks; to the right of this is the parking space for bicycles, which takes up half the ground floor. The entrance front from the square is crowned by a gable that, together with a vestige of window shutters, is meant to recall the storehouses that once characterized this location.
