All Under One Roof: Multifunctional Building by C.F. Møller Architects
The parcel of land measures around 3.7 hectares and adjoins Ikast’s educational institutions, which comprise an international school, business college, secondary school and teaching college, to the west. The large grounds feature a colourful combination of activities and thus appeal to a broad range of users. Along with the obstacle course, there are a mountain biking track, beach volleyball courts, a general sports field and playgrounds. Seating, a campfire site and a picnic zone complete the outdoor area. The multifunctional building known as Hjertet - the heart of this project- stands at the centre of this diverse landscape.
At first glance, Hjertet seems like a Scandinavian big brother to the VitraHaus. As with Vitra, there is a conglomerate of several nested volumes with saddle roofs. But with more than 3,500 m² to work with, C.F. Møller Architects have designed this building, which is packaged all around in narrow, vertical wooden slats, to completely different dimensions. The individual structures differ in width and height; their respective glazed transverse façades are oriented towards the outdoors.
Inside, C.F. Møller have made the opening times the centre of attention. They have organized the functions in such a way that Hjertet is busy round the clock, like a small city that never sleeps. In the afternoon and evening, the wings used as classrooms in the morning transform into multipurpose spaces with room for evening classes, workshops and club meetings. The complex also features a gym, a café and an organic grocery store. Hjertet is rounded out with areas for cultural events, dance, yoga and a counselling centre. The spatial program is arranged around the central intersection of each volume, which is home to a communal plaza with seating steps and a stage. The plaza brings users together in all the bustling activity and guides them towards the various areas.
