A Matter of Beauty: Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2019
“Beauty is a matter of opinion, multifaceted and individual”, is one of the guiding principles at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale. TAB 2019 will concentrate on the formation and development of aesthetics across all design disciplines. Under the title Beauty Matters: The Resurgence of Beauty, the Estonian Centre for Architecture will direct this year’s Biennale from 11 September until 17 November: “a festival as a revival of beauty, which since the 1940s has occupied the background in favour of rationality and pragmatism.”
TAB 2019 will be a platform for communication and debate among local and international architects, experts in various fields and the general public. Five events will form the program: a main exhibition, a symposium, a vision competition, an international school exhibition and an installation program. Associated events by Estonian architect Kirke Päss will accompany the festival.
The opening ceremony of the Architecture Biennale will be an occasion for conferences and interdisciplinary debates on the subject of this year’s title. Works by international names such as Sou Fujimoto and Soma will be shown within the framework of the subsequent main exhibition. The vision competition is directed primarily at young, up-and-coming architects: their utopias that serve as an escape from standardized architecture will be exhibited separately under the title Terribly Beautiful.
