An anniversary year
Text: Sandra Hofmeister
60 years ago, the first edition of Detail was published, at that time still with hand-drawn plans and predominantly with black and white photos. Since its founding in 1961, Detail has published 449 issues and documented over 5,700 projects from all over the world.
Over the years, building technologies and methods have changed dramatically. Detail has continuously accompanied these developments, showing their application in building structures and construction details. But the distinctive DETAIL lettering on the magazine’s cover remained the same to this day.
Specialized Information Worldwide
Detail is now sold in 80 countries worldwide, and some 54,000 architects from all continents read every issue. Since 2003, Detail has also been issued six times a year in a Chinese licensed edition. In the 1970s the first Detail Atlas was published. In the 2010s, Edition Detail was launched to distribute our German and English-language specialist books in print and as e-books.
Quantum Leaps in Development
Not only architecture, but also Detail has made a quantum leap forward in these 60 years. The Detail Inspiration digital database was added to our website. It is an ongoing compilation of our project documentations dating back six decades, and is available on a subscription basis. Detail has evolved into an international platform, bundling expertise and providing the international architecture community with news, also on social media.
You, dear readers, have accompanied us over all these years. We appreciate your trust as much as that of our industry partners. In our anniversary year, we want to envision the future of architecture together, but also take stock of the past. In each issue and on detail-online.com we will be presenting special treasures from our archives. At detail-online.com/60Years we will be collecting greetings from all over the world – including via video or podcasts – and will keep you informed about all our planned activities, congresses and our big anniversary issue in June 2021.
We look forward to celebrating 60 years of architecture with you – looking back and looking forward.
