The kernel of the project is the desire for a large house, where each of the children can have some independence from the family group. This architecture establishes each child as the keeper of their own tower in a glorious interpretation of a 19th century, romantic and rambling country house, taken after a medieval castle.

Continuing today’s theme of houses built around the appreciation of a particular tree, the Offset house in São Paulo, Brazil designed by Shieh Arquitetos Associados shows its appreciation of the magnificent tree already found on the site by articulating two halves of the building to create the impression that it wraps around the tree. From inside openings are placed at different levels, giving the viewer a perception of the tree’s full scale. Read more

The building, designed by Carl Turner Architects, is a retreat, a place to get away from it, a think-space or a modern fishing hut, or perhaps a writer’s hangout. It was built for a tiny budget, but you could not necessarily tell that from its exterior. Its black, simple form and uncluttered detailing is intended almost to give the impression that it is a shadow of the adjacent barn building to which it stands in a perpendicular relationship.

With this in mind this is the first in this occasional series and features the Machi House built in Fukuyama and designed by UID Architects of Hiroshima, Japan. It was completed in 2011 and relies for its clarity on the manipulation of natural light and views all within a tight urban site
