As far as hotel experiences go, leaning out over a lake with a view of the mountains around Guiyang in China, promises to be a memorable one. The building, designed by BIG, aims to increase the profile of an area already popular with tourists through the iconic nature of the building design. The city’s educational cultural centre could well become something of a architectural theme park with apparently several international practices creating proposals there. Read more

I have become used to seeing exceptionally expressive architecture in the Middle East and China, but this noticeable piece is to be found in Amsterdam and is set to open on the 5th April. It is EYE: The Film Institute Netherlands.
We are told that the design of the building was concerned with ‘plural perspective’ and ‘physiological effect’. The white cladding is apparently a reference to cinematography and the façade, I think that means the glazing, reflects light in constantly changing conditions. Read more

City gateways, either physical or metaphorical, are seldom as elegant, or as heroic as the Shanxi Grand Theatre. Arte Charpentier Architects saw the project as an opportunity to take the theatre to the people by creating a giant esplanade under the building where outdoor performances can be staged. In that sense the form of the building can be seen as a proscenium arch under which performances will take place, but also as a metaphorical gateway to open expression. Read more
