Unfinished Modernisations Between Utopia and Pragmatism. Exhibition at the Maribor Art Gallery Slovenia

For hardcore Modernists visiting Slovenia between the 10th February and the 22nd March the exhibition Unfinished Modernisations: Between Utopia and Pragmatism at the Maribor Art Gallery looks to be something of a treat. A number of exhibitions, lectures and books have recently spawned that look at the architectural legacy left behind the Iron Curtain. This exhibition concentrates on the former Yugoslavia and looks to understand the role architecture and urban planning played in defining Socialism itself. Read more

Yuan Ze University, Taiwan by Santiago Calatrava

Santiago Calatrava has been appointed to design a new Performing Arts Center at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan. The centre includes an Art and Design school and the Y.Z. Hsu Memorial Hall, which is dedicated to the university’s founder, Mr. Yu-Ziang Hsu. Read more

Student Housing by Studioninedots + HDVN

Some interesting student housing is promised with the competition win by Studioninedots + HDVN for a project at TU Delft Campus, Netherlands. The design is based on a simple double-loaded corridor configuration creating a building volume that is 5 storeys high and 67m long. Through this block of student rooms holes have been punched creating voids within the volume that create communal external space and a focus for the building. Read more

Taliesin Mod.Fab by Students at The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture

It looks as though it was inspired by the De Stijl art movement. Taliesin Mod.Fab is a study prototype for a 600 square foot sustainable house situated in the desert close to The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Arizona, USA. It was designed and built by some of the school’s students and is a serious study in sustainable living that relies on more than style for its impact. Read more

Will Alsop rejoins the discourse on architecture with an exhibition at The Public, a cultural centre he designed and which he once described as his best yet! A Box of Delights is part of the Art of Architecture programme which has seen Alsop collaborate with students from Birmingham City University Architecture Department, Walsall College Interior Design Department and Sheffield Hallam Architecture Department.
