The study of art, particularly the grand master paintings, is often the study of the artist, his life and times, his influences, his contemporaries and his other works as well as the techniques he used and even the type and ingredients of the paint. Modern studies might also look at the physical qualities of the painting itself using X-rays, ultraviolet and other imaging technologies.
