Something to tickle your fancy this Christmas: Bauballs Christmas decorations.

The “silly season” is a brief period of warmish weather when the British become near delirious at the prospect of a couple of days of sunshine that visitors to the country completely fail to recognize as the British summer! During this period, traditional British reserve is sometimes suspended as people, especially politicians, do and say strange things!

This year, during the month of November, there were fears that the lack of any sun at all during summer had caused an uncharacteristic delay to the silly season. At first there were mutterings of climate change being responsible, but this could not explain the profusion of moustachioed men that had been observed not just in the UK but in America too.

Eventually, further research by experts in this field, realised that the mushrooming of moustaches was in fact explained by a campaign Great Stache Off to aimed at drawing awareness to male conditions such as testicular and prostate cancer. It was a very successful, but by the end of November, the month of the moustache was over and most men could hardly wait to shave them off!

There were also complaints of sexism. Women and children, keen to show solidarity with their menfolk, could only participate by wearing stick-on moustaches. Something had to give. Read more

Rubbish on the bin: Video enabled recycle bins.

The video enabled bin on London's streets.

Yesterday I saw a new kind of advertising billboard disguised as a recycle bin! Like many recycle bins it is a graceless thing made of black plastic with a bright logo indicating what recyclable can be deposited in it. At each end of the bin is a flat panel video screen about a metre tall and half a metre wide.

On each screen is a live video feed featuring a mixture of adverts in one form or another, with a sprinkle of news flashes, weather and other useful data that it is hoped will be sufficient to prevent people blanking it from their field consciousness altogether.

Once registered it is doubtful the bin will ever be noticed again. It will become invisible. Read more
